Hydro Jetting: Your Solution for Tough Clogs

If you’re experiencing a clog and have tried a plunger or drain snake with poor results—you may need to call a professional plumber skilled in fixing complex clogs in residential pipes and sewer lines.

Different clogs require hands-on experience and specific plumbing tools to fix them. If a serious clog is causing havoc in your home plumbing system, high pressure pipe cleaning or “hydro jetting” may be the answer.

What is Hydro Jet Cleaning?

Hydro jetting is a process used to unclog and deep clean the interiors of plumbing and sewer lines throughout a residential or commercial plumbing system.  It works like a “scouring pad”, thoroughly cleaning the insides of pipes, in addition to removing blockages.

A hydro jet pipe cleaner uses a specially designed hose and nozzle that shoot powerful blasts of water directly into the drain or sewer pipe from every direction, including backwards.

Both organic and inorganic materials clogging the plumbing are broken apart by the forward spray and forced further down the pipe. The rear-facing jets blast residual sludge and debris off the inside of the pipes.

The hydro jet’s pressurized stream can break down and completely remove organic and inorganic clogs involving:
  • Tree roots, wood, paper products
  • Fats, oils, and grease (FOG)
  • Hair, soap scum
  • Dirt, silt, rust and mineral deposits
  • Concrete, clay
Based on the type of clog and the condition of the pies, the appropriate hose is connected to a pressure-generating motor that increases water pressure to between 400-1500 psi, although rates as high as 10,000-60,000 psi might be needed for especially tough blockages.

The Benefits of High Pressure Pipe Cleaning

Hydro jetting is a safe and effective way to address residential or commercial plumbing and sewer system blockages. Compared to using chemical cleaners or a drain snake, the risk of damage to pipes is lower, which is important if you have older plumbing in your home or office space.

Completely Cleans and Unclogs – As time passes, all sorts of sludge and debris begin to accumulate in your pipes. This includes grease and fats, soap scum build up, dirt and silt, paper products, and mineral deposits, which coat the inside of the pipes.

A drain snake can sometimes dislodge a small blockage, but it does nothing to clear away the nasty coating on the pipe’s walls, which can result in new blockages. Also, snakes can’t clear some clogs, such as grease or soap scum, or destructive clogs like tree roots and stony sediment.

Fast and Efficient Cleaning – High pressure pipe cleaning allows for precision and speed. There are many different types of hoses and nozzles and levels of water pressure available to an experienced plumber, allowing them to address nearly any type of clog.

Saves Money, Saves Time – Hydro jetting takes place on the interior of the pipes, so this service can be performed without having to dig up plumbing lines. Because access to pipes beneath pavement or inside walls isn’t necessary, hydro jet services can reduce the cost of repairs.

Applications for Both Residential and Commercial Customers

Hydro jetting is safe, effective, and can be performed on residential and commercial drains, including:

Main Sewer Drain - Common clogs result from roots, heavy scale buildup, grease and sludge.

Kitchen Drain - Grease, oils, and fats can stick to the drain line.

Laundry Drain - Soap products can harden, reducing flow and causing laundry backups.

Bathroom Sink Drain - Soap scum and poor maintenance can result in buildup on the inside of sink lines.

Tub/Shower Drain - Hair buildup and shower products can slow or block flow.

Storm Drain - During heavy rains, if storm drains are clogged with debris or rocks, they can overflow and cause property damage.

If you’re experiencing slow pipes or a sewer blockage at your home, hydro jetting can be a fast and economical solution for removing common residential clogs, such as paper products and greasy deposits.

Hydro Jetting for Commercial Properties

Plumbing systems in commercial settings are exposed to much higher usage, pressures, and abuse than your average single-family home.

Commercial businesses face major plumbing issues, such as:
  • Restroom plumbing systems burdened by high usage and clogs from paper products
  • Restaurant workers dumping oils, grease, and food waste down sinks and drains
  • Industrial facilities dumping chemicals or debris into floor drains
Clogged drains and sewer line blockages can grind business on commercial properties to a halt. Fortunately, by hiring a plumber experienced in commercial hydro jetting, business owners can rest assured that their plumbing systems will be cleared quickly and safely.

High-pressure pipe cleaning is not only an economical and effective way to deal with blockages and clogs on your commercial property but also works as a preventive measure to keep the pipes in your business clean and in good working order.

Is Hydro Jetting Recommended for All Drain Clogs?

Hydro jetting can tackle the most severe clogs in many types of pipe material including concrete, steel, cast iron, PVC, and clay.

However, due to the high psi levels involved in hydro jetting, your plumber might need to adjust the pressure to avoid causing damage to any damaged or weak sections, or use a different method to clear the clog safely and effectively.

Before beginning work, your plumber will perform a video inspection to determine whether the pipes have any weaknesses or pre-existing damage. After the job is done, your plumber will visually inspect the pipes again, to ensure the application was successful.
